MINI REVIEWS: My Top 3 Mascaras + Mascara Base

I've tried so many mascaras in the past from high-end to low-end and I always go back to drugstore mascaras. They're easy access, affordable, and most of them have really nice formulas. But I've also started to venture out in Asian brands and have fallen in love with fiber mascaras as well. So here's a quick low down on my top three.

I'll start with the mascara base first as this is the first time I've used a base/primer for my lashes. The one I use is from Shiseido. I was torn between this and the MAC Prep & Prime Lash, but Shiseido has never failed me so I went for it. This mascara goes for $22USD at Sephora and Shiseido counters. The price is a bit steep, but its definitely a good buy. This base works well with all the mascaras I have, and a little goes a long way. I don't let it dry before I apply mascara either as if I do, my lashes get really stiff. If I apply mascara right after this base, it does not clump, it thickens, holds a curl all day, as well as lengthens. I recommend this base for anyone who needs help with thickening and keeping mascara from flaking through out the day.

The Maybelline Hypercurl Cat Eyes mascara. This is only available in Asia, unless you can find it on EBay or swap with someone you know. I got this from a swap I did with my friend Hanna two months back. I believe she told me this mascara runs for RM39.90 (which is ridiculously expensive), but I think she got this on sale? This is a comb mascara and it thickens and lengthens. If you're looking for an instant dramatic mascara, this is a good choice. This holds a curl very well and the great thing about this is that its not a fiber mascara, yet when you wash it off, it comes off as flakes so there's no worry in looking like a raccoon. I'd recommend this mascara for those who are looking for a good thickening and lengthening mascara.

Shiseido's Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus - a good competitor to the Hypercurl. This is a fiber mascara that has a unique two-sided comb applicator - a straight edge to deposit the mascara right at the base and a curved end to help separate and lengthen. This mascara ranges from $17-20USD depending where you buy it from. EBay, Ichibankao, Facial-Shop and Imomoko are some of the sites you can purchase this mascara from. This mascara is water-proof and lengthens lashes like nobody's business. The only problem for me with this mascara is that, sometimes it can be messy. I think because my lashes are fairly long and slightly curly, I tend to get the product on my lids - so I have to be extra careful using it. And yes, I know about the old school credit card/business card trick - I don't use this method because I don't like it, lol. So what I do to avoid mess ups is that I blink onto the mascara wand - which is more simple and works well for me. Totally recommend this mascara for anyone.

This one brings back memories - Maybelline's Full N' Soft mascara. I used this way back in middle school and this was the first mascara I've tried. I came back to it recently because I remembered how much I adored this mascara. This mascara is about $5USD and probably the most buildable out of the other two mascaras and makes my look look real thick, yet natural looking. It does not clump, it holds a curl nicely and it doesn't feel heavy on your lashes. And yes, my lashes still feel soft after I've applied this. (: I recommend this mascara for those who already have some decent lashes, or are looking for something that gives a natural, defined lash look. This mascara is perfect for every day and doesn't look heavy or over power your face especially if you're like me and don't like to wear a lot of makeup during the day.

If there's anything that I may have left out or if you have any other questions, let me know. (: A small giveaway for my followers is coming up real soon so keep a look out for that! Have a great day everyone and thanks for reading!

  7. Hi sweety!
    Interesting review. Im looking for a mascare now actually. :)

    Well, talking about our swap I'd be very interested in getting 2 things: 1st would be MAC lipstick in the color of "angel". There is MAC in Poland but here in Europe it's suuuuuuper expensive. It's on the same shelf with Dior, Chanel etc.
    2nd thing would be Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. I heard it's good and it's unavailable here.
    Other things I'd let you to pick :)

    I can send you from here Inglot cosmetics. they have very good nailpolishes (in various colors), nice lipsticks and eyeshadows. The other Polish company I discovered was "Golden Rose". They have great eyeshadows, for dry and wet use. And in wet use they look amazing and last forever.
    I'd also send you some skin care stuff for you to try, cuz Im a big fan of cosmetics based on thermal water or eco-cosmetics. Let me know what you think.
    Take care sweetheart!!

  10. - Lynn ;
    Definitely! I think Hypercurl is the best Maybelline mascara to date! Alongside Full N' Soft of course, haha.

    - Dina ;
    If you ever get a chance to try the MJ mascara, I know you will definitely love it dear!

    - Nee ;
    Haha, yeah. I'm the same way. This is actually the most mascaras I've owned at one time. I've never had more than one mascara at a time, so to me this is too much, lol.

  11. - Gio ;
    Hypercurl is definitely a good mascara. Sad that it is only available in Asia.

    - Kasia_B ;
    I can definitely get you MAC's Angel. As with Urban Decay, I think Its possible to get your the Primer Potion as they're having an F&F sale online. Because Sehora is like 1 hour away from my city, lol.

    - Blovet Beauty ;
    Definitely get your hands on Hypercurl! I actually prefer it over Lash Blast, lol. Sometimes mascaras flake on me so using a base helps it from drying out. (:

  12. I'm still glad that u love the Cat Eye mascara I sent your few months back. ^_^ Did I say RM39.90??? Now that u mentioned it, it did sound ABSURD...to spend that much on a single drugstore brand which could expand only up to 3 months. Hmm perhaps RM33.90, if im not mistaken.

    But yeah, I was smart enough to get it for on on sale for RM27.90. Hehee.
